Common Physical Therapy Myths and Truths
1. MYTH: You need a referral from a doctor for physical therapy
TRUTH: Ohio enacted a law that allows for direct access to physical therapy. That means you can come directly into our physical therapy clinic at any time for aches, pain, sprains, etc. without permission from a doctor or other healthcare provider. Physical therapists have the experience to evaluate and identify a red flag which could indicate that you need further medical attention. Otherwise, you and the therapist will start with a one-on-one treatment plan!
2. MYTH: You can only go to the clinic recommended by your doctor
TRUTH: Doctors may recommend a specific physical therapy clinic but you don’t have to go there. You can request to complete physical therapy at any clinic you want! Do research and find the clinic that fits for you – including hours, location, and therapists!
3. MYTH: You need to have imaging before beginning therapy
TRUTH: In most cases, imaging is not necessary prior to beginning physical therapy. A physical therapist can provide treatment without imaging, medication, and/or surgery. A study in 2005 revealed that physical therapists predicted the correct diagnosis 75% of the time which is nearly as accurate as orthopedic surgeons (80.8%) who are able to order imaging! While imaging is an important medical tool, physical therapy is a good way to start recovery!
4. MYTH: Physical therapy is not covered by insurance
TRUTH: Most health insurance policies cover physical therapy! Our office staff checks with your insurance company to ensure you know your benefits and coverage. In the long run, physical therapy reduces medical costs by helping individuals recover without needing expensive imaging, medication, multiple appointments, or surgery.
5. MYTH: Physical therapy is only for people who are in an accident, injured, or post-surgical patients
TRUTH: Physical therapists work on anything and everything! Physical therapists work on necks, backs, shoulders, knees, ankles… therapists are able to work with individuals experiencing chronic pain, headaches, stiffness, weakness. Physical therapists are even able to work with individuals who have been diagnosed with movement disorders or those who have experienced a stroke. Did you know physical therapists also provide “pre-habilitation”?! We can prepare you for sport, prevent falls through balance and coordination training, and ready you for surgery!
6. MYTH: Physical therapy is painful
TRUTH: PT does not stand for pain and torture and we’re not “physical terrorists” as some may say. Physical therapy may challenge you physically but you should feel improvements in mobility and pain and feel as though your progressing towards your goals with every visit!
7. MYTH: Physical therapists are the same as massage therapists and personal trainers
TRUTH: Physical therapists receive a lot of education and hands-on training prior to becoming your therapist. Physical therapy is a doctorate level degree requiring 7 years of schooling which includes a combination of in classroom and in clinic learning. Physical therapy will consist of a thorough evaluation, hands-on joint and soft tissue mobilization, and activity or sport specific exercise for balance, endurance, mobility, and strength. Your physical therapist will be with you every step to help you reach your goals!
